Police step up vigil against illegal betting

Kathmandu, June 14

Police have stepped up vigil against illegal betting on Euro 2016 football tournament.

A special team of the Metropolitan Police Circle, Janasewa raided room number 133 of Sundhara-based RB Complex, a supermarket, and arrested two persons on the charge of running an online betting syndicate.

The suspects detained by police are Sagar Khadgi (34) of Anamnagar and Deepak Ratna Shakya (36) of Tahachal.

Officials said they were running the illegal business online by luring prospective gamblers into betting on the Euro 2016 football tournament via smartphones and laptop, as many people, especially the teen gamblers and football fans are increasingly being attracted to such activities.

Police had caught them red-handed and confiscated Rs 245,000 from the duo.

Police said they had stepped up crackdown on gambling activities as illegal betting surges during international football and cricket tournaments.

Officials are having a tough time cracking gambling syndicates due to easy availability of smartphones and Internet services, which can be misused to carry out such activities. Betting on any sports event is illegal in Nepal.

18 gamblers held

LALITPUR: Police on Moday raided a gambling den operated by Bimala Mali in Thecho and arrested 16 persons, including Mali, for allegedly gambling and causing others to gamble.

Police confisated Rs 716,976, 10 decks of playing cards and other gambling materials from them. They have been charged under the Gambling Act.
