Protect children’s rights: KMC mayor

Kathmandu, June 28

Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya has underscored the need to take concrete measures to protect the rights of children.

Speaking at a programme here today, Mayor Shakya said the KMC was currently working on policies for its local governance and called on all concerned authorities to come up with solutions to children’s issues so that it could plan its budget accordingly.

Tarak Dhital, executive director of Central Child Welfare Board, said the local governments had a duty to protect children’s rights.

“Local governments should be responsive towards issues of children with disabilities, rehabilitation of street children, child marriage, teenage pregnancy and unsafe abortion, child labour, sexual violence and child trafficking,” he said.

On the occasion, Deputy Mayor of Tokha Municipality Gyan Maya Dangol said all wards of Tokha Municipality would be declared child-friendly by 2018.
