Right information needed at the right time: PM

Kathmandu, August 22

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said right information at the right time is needed to disseminate factual information to the general public from both the government and the media sector.

Speaking at a programme on the occasion of the 9th National Information Day organised by National Information Commission today in the capital, he emphasised the importance of information to strengthen democracy as well as to make the general people aware about their constitutional rights.

He added that human beings are different from other creatures only due to accessibility of information and their industriousness. He said the public had supported every political change and revolution in Nepal after receiving information about their rights and the fact that they were being suppressed by the then rulers.

This had encouraged them to start revolutions.

“Information is needed to make the public aware about their rights, but right information is needed at the right time to give accurate information” he said.

At the programme, Information and Communications minister Surendra Kumar Karki stressed the necessity of information dissemination up to the local level and also the use of modern technology.

Similarly chief Commissioner of National Information Commission, Krishna Hari Baskota spoke on the development and activities of the commission. Besides this, he requested the prime minister to remove a few written hurdles from the constitution to enable easy access to information.

He informed that people in all the 75 districts have been made aware about the right to information.

At the programme, Prime Minister Dahal made public a book of collection of orders from the National Information Commission in 2015-16 and the logo of RTI.
