Sushil Koirala resigns from premiership to run for the post again

KATHMANDU: Outgoing Prime Minister Sushil Koirala submitted his resignation from the post of Prime Minister to President Ram Baran Yadav, on Saturday.

Koirala's press coordinator Prakash Adhikari said Koirala called on President Yadav at the latter's office and handed over the resignation.

Meanwhile, President Yadav accepted the resignation, while assigning Koirala-led Cabinet to conduct daily administrative functions till a new government is formed.

Koirala's resignation came on the eve of new Prime Minister's election at the Parliament scheduled for Sunday.

As the House was all set to elect the new PM tomorrow, the resignation was just a formality.

Meanwhile, Koirala is filing his candidacy for the premiership from his Nepali Congress party. He is running against CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli.

It is likely that Oli will win the election with an easy majority as more than a dozen parties including UCPN-Maoist have extended support to him.

Earlier, on October 2, Koirala had addressed the Parliament and requested the President to initiate procedures to elect a new Prime Minister as required by the recently promulgated Nepal's Constitution.

He, however, had not categorically said that he would tender his resignation from his post.
