Ten thematic committees to elect chairs on Aug 21

  • Except for PAC all the other committee chairs will be chosen on majority basis

Kathmandu, August 13

The federal Parliament has scheduled to hold election of the ten thematic committees of the House of Representatives on August 21.

Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara announced today that the ten thematic committees’ election will be held on August 21.

Speaker Mahara asked Secretary General of Federal Parliament Manohar Prasad Bhattrai to publish information about the committee’s chairpersons’ election today. Following the speaker Bhattrai published a notice for the election of parliamentary panels.

The Parliamentary Account Committee has 27 members and it functions to make the government accountable.

The 25-member Financial Committee checks and directs the government in financial affairs. The International Relations Committee, which has 25 members, keeps tabs on the government’s foreign policies, while the Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Interest Committee has 24 members and looks after related issues.

Other committees are: Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee (23 members), Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources Committee (25 members), Women and Social Committee (24 members), State Affairs and Good Governance Committee (26 members), Development and Technology Committee (27 members) and Education and Health Committee (24 members) in the House of Representative.

Except Parliamentary Account Committee, the other committees are likely to elect the chairperson from the ruling party on the basis of majority.
