Maoist leader Rayamajhi urges PM Dahal to withdraw bill

KATHMANDU: CPN Maoist Centre leader Top Bahadur Rayamajhi urged his party Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to withdraw the Constitution amendment bill the government recently registered.

Speaking with journalists in Kathmandu today, the CPN MC Parliamentary Party deputy leader said the bill would push the nation towards a conflict and might also result into a disintegration.

Further, it would be the best option for Dahal to withdraw the bill as it is very unlikely to get endorsed from the House, the leader said.

"I had requested the Prime Minister to put forth this proposal only if we can forge a national consensus," he said, "Otherwise, it would prove our failure."

In particular, Rayamajhi opposed the proposal to split the Province No. 5 claiming it was not demanded by any agitating group.

Rayamajhi's Arghakhanchi district was also included in Province No. 5 in the Constitution and the recent proposal has tried to shift it to Province No. 4.

"Everyone--from people to people's representatives--is against this proposal," he said.

Announcing that he would vote against the bill if it was put to vote, Rayamajhi hoped that all lawmakers from the Province No. 5 would stand together against the bill.

At the same programme, CPN-UML Deputy General Secretary Bishnu Prasad Paudel said his party would take any action to ensure failure of the Constitution amendment bill, arguing the proposal, if endorsed, would put the Constitution itself at risk.
