Two nabbed for peddling counterfeit gold bars

KATHMANDU: Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Teku, on Thursday evening arrested two persons on the charge of peddling seven kilograms of counterfeit gold bars.

The arrested have been identified as Dipendra Baraili (25) of Duragaun area in Likhu Rural Municiapality-1 of Ramechhap district, and Ramesh Baiju (27) of Phulpingkot area in Balephi Rural Municipality-2 of Sindhupalchok district.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of police deployed from the MPCD arrested Baraili and Baiju with seven gold-like metal bars from Harisiddhi-based BKM Khajaghar (restaurant) in Lalitpur Metropolitan City-28.

The duo had been allegedly peddling around and looking for customers to sell seven kilograms (kgs) of the counterfeit gold bars at the price of Rs 8 million.

The security personnel have also confiscated four mobile phone sets from their possession and impounded a motorcycle.

Meanwhile, the MPCD has concluded the preliminary investigation and has handed over the alleged frauds to the Metropolitan Police Range, Lalitpur for further investigation into the case, police informed.

Superintendent of Police Narendra Prasad Upreti told THT Online that the duo would be tried under the case involving swindling and robbery.
