VP stresses reforms in education sector

Kathmandu, February 2

Vice-president Nanda Bahadur Pun has stressed the need for reforms in the country’s education policy.

Inaugurating the seventh Southwestern Science Exhibition and Career in Management-2017 here today, he said government should promote scientific, practical, job-oriented and research-based education.

“A lot of children from marginalised communities are still deprived of education, while around 32,500 students leave the country every year for higher education abroad,” said the vice-president, adding, “Even educated youths are compelled to seek employment opportunities abroad. This shows that there is a problem somewhere in our education policy.”

Pun said education in Nepal was expensive. “Given the facts, we wonder if our education system is practical and relevant in today’s world. Our education system needs reforms to meet the demands of changing times.”

Speaking at the function, deputy chief of Southwestern College Hari Singh KC said about 20,000 visitors were expected to visit the exhibition. The two-day exhibition will conclude on Friday.
