Winter creeps in as monsoon bids adieu to Valley

Kathmandu, October 22

As the monsoon retreats from the Valley, Kathmandu denizens have started to feel winter slowly creep up on them. Data from the Meteorological Forecasting Division has shown that the temperature has fallen by five degree Celsius within a week since October 15, the day when almost all moisture from the Bay of Bangal retreated from eastern Nepal.

The MFD said with the withdrawal of monsoon, Valley skies are almost clear at nights, resulting in reduced temperatures in the city.

“Although the sky is partly cloudy during the day, the night skies are almost invariably clear in recent days, which is why the weather has turned colder,” Barun Paudel, meteorologist at the MFD, told The Himalayan Times, “The temperature is expected to plummet further in coming days with no possibility of rain or any system developing in and around of the Valley.”

Paudel said the clear nights have resulted into temperatures as low as around 12 degree Celsius, making nights and mornings in the Valley cold.

Data shows the minimum temperature in the Valley was 12.5 degree Celsius today, while the maximum temperature was 27.3 degree Celsius.

Director General at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology Dr Rishi Ram Sharma said temperature will continue to dip until the winter peaks.
