12th graders picket NEB office over poor grades, cry foul play

POKHARA: After the recent announcement of Grade 11 results, 12th graders under science faculties in higher secondary schools of Pokhara hit the streets accusing the National Examinations Board of negligence in checking answer sheets.

The students launched a protest against the poor grades awarded to them in physics and chemistry subjects and picketed the NEB office demanding a re-check of answer sheets on Friday.

Out of 30,562 examinees who sat for 11th grade final exams that concluded on March 2018 in Gandaki Province, 2,700 pupils applied for re-totaling of their scores. However, the NEB has reconciled only 135 answer sheets and scores till date raising many eyebrows.

Even the NEB officials at Pokhara reckon that some discrepancies might have occurred while recording grades or checking answer sheets.

According to NEB Pokhara Information Officer Tulsi Ram Wosti, the results of Grade 11 exams might not be indicative of the actual performance of pupils as majority of them have received either a “D” grade or an “E” in physics and chemistry.

Given that, Wosti said respective teachers might have erred while checking pupils’ copies.

“We are impelled to deal with such a situation because of NEB’s negligence and mismanagement of teachers,” a protesting student expressed discontent.
