131 cases of VAW including 36 rapes registered in one month

KATHMANDU: The country has witnessed a total of 131 incidents of violence against women in the past month.

Of them, 36 were incidents of rape including seven gang rapes and one murder after rape, monthly documentation by the Women Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC), showed.

Moreover, 53 per cent of those affected were girls below the age of 16 while 22 per cent were between 17 to 30 years, according to WOREC Programme Director Abhiram Raya.

Likewise, more than 50 per cent of women and girls who suffered violence including rape suffered at the hands of persons known to them including relatives and neighbours.

The record was based on the complaints received by the Centre and news reports about such incidents.
