KATHMANDU: A woman in her early 60s reportedly died in a police firing in Rangeli of Morang on Thursday.

SP Tarini Prasad Lamsal, Morang District Police Office chief, told THT Online over phone from the incident site that the woman, who is yet to be identified*, had sustained a bullet injury from a police firing.

The woman was sent to a Biratnagar-based hospital for treatment, police said. It is not yet clear if the woman succumbed to her injuries on the way or at the hospital.

According to the police official, police were forced to open fire as the cadres of protesting United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) attacked police with domestic weapons including bows and arrows.

The UDMF cadres had resorted to protests in order to foil a programme organised by CPN-UML-affiliated Youth Association Nepal. Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli was scheduled to address the programme.

Some security personnel also sustained minor injuries in the clash.

Police had used dozens of shells of tear gas in retaliation.

The town was tense since this morning as sporadic clashes between UDMF and YAN were reported from assorted locations.

*She was later identifed as Devaki Chaudhary.
