7 casinos raided in Kathmandu valley, 2 arrested

KATHMANDU: A special team deployed from Metropolitan Crime Division on Monday raided seven casinos being operated inside Kathmandu Valley.

The team, after obtaining a tip-off regarding illegal entry of Nepali citizens in the casino and illegal gambling, raided the casinos and arrested a gambler and casino manager from a casino in Durbar Marg of KMC, according to police.

During the raid in Casino Royal at Durbar Marg, police team detained a Nepali-speaking Sete Lama (66) of Tusal in KMC-6 sans any identification papers on him and the casino manager Biswo Shrestha (45) of Tahachal in KMC-13.

Meanwhile, the arrestee duo have been sent to Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range, Teku for further investigation and action, said police.

According to the Gambling Act, 1963, a fine of Rs 200 for committing the offence for the first time, imprisonment from one to three months for the second time, and an imprisonment of one year for third time and more.

In Nepal, Nepali citizens are barred from entering casinos for the express purpose of gambling.
