Over 8,000 Nepalis trafficked annually, says NHRC

KATHMANDU: Over 8,000 Nepali citizens are being subjected to human trafficking every year, a national report claimed.

The report published by the National Human Rights Commission said the numbers of trafficking victims in each of past two fiscal years (2013/14 and 2014/15) lie between 8,000 and 8,500.

Likewise, a total of 9,000 to 9,500 persons were subjected to attempted trafficking in each of the years, the Commission said.

Commission Chairman Anup Raj Sharma unveiled the report amid a special function on Monday.

"There has been considerably far lower number of trafficking in persons cases registered in Nepal Police in the FY 2013/14 and FY 2014/15 (185 and 181 cases, respectively)," the report read, "The key reason it is under-reporting and under-registration of human trafficking cases including an overlap in measures of Foreign Employment Act and the Human Trafficking and Transportation Control Act."

According to the report, majority of victims were recruited through giving false promises.

"It is reported that traffickers work in a group. In majority of the cases, the traffickers crossed the border with the victims during the daytime. Trafficking route is reported to be the main official border points between Nepal-India and Nepal-Tibet."

The report was prepared using both primary and secondary data, according to the Commission spokesperson, Mohna Ansari.

"Information was also collected after the three months of the deadly earthquake of April 25, 2015," Ansari said in a statement today, "The earthquake of has greatly increased the vulnerability of trafficking especially of women and children."
