Bandh hits Chitwan dairy farmers hard

CHITWAN: Dairy farmers here have been hard hit due to the two-day bandh.

As the Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) did not collect around 200,000 litre milk, which they produced on a daily basis, farmers have been affected directly. The DDC collects about 20,000 litre milk everyday from the district.

Despite having enough storage space, the DDC made various excuses to avoid collecting milk while the private dairies have been collecting the milk as usual, farmers complained.

According to the Chitwan Dairy Production Cooperative Association Chair Harihar Subedi, though the DDC informed it would not collect milk for two days, they did not have any option than to throw out the milk.

Though the Corporation has not changed price of milk, it has left paying Rs 1.50 per litre transport expenses to the cooperatives, according to Subedi.

Subedi added that private dairies, however, give them Rs one to three per litre for transportation.
