Birgunj student leaders held for vandalism, arson at campus

BIRGUNJ: Police on Thursday arrested three student union leaders for their alleged involvement in vandalism and arson attack at the Thakur Ram Multiple Campus in Birgunj of Parsa.

The student leaders are accused of setting furniture of the Campus Chief's office on fire after vandalising the office.

Campus Chief Pramod Kumar Kushwaha said the students had resorted to the arson attack after the institution continued registering student unions for the upcoming Free Student Union elections.

The arrestees are Nikhil Barnawal, Madhu Sudan Chaurasiya and Krishna Das, affiliated with student unions close to major two Madhes-based parties.

Barnawal is the Central Member of Socialist Student Forum, the student wing of the Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal while Chaurasiya is the District Chairman of the same organisation.

Das is the District Chairman of the Bidyarthi Manch, the student wing of Sadbhawana Party.

SP Govinda Sah said the detainees were kept at the District Police Office and further investigation was underway.

Meanwhile, some union cadres pelted stones at police personnel after the arrest.
