CC fails to meet as scheduled

Kathmandu, November 29

A scheduled meeting of Constitutional Council could not take place as President of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala failed to attend the meeting. The CC meeting was set to discuss the appointment of three commissioners of the Election Commission. The agenda will be discussed in the next meeting.

Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha, a member of the CC, said today’s scheduled meeting could not take place due to absence of Koirala. Koirala is a member of the CC on account of being the Parliamentary Party leader of the principal opposition party.

According to Atul Koirala, an assistant of the NC Parliamentary Party leader, he could not attend the meeting for health reasons. “He suffers from cold and cough and is taking rest,” said Atul Koirala.

Posts of three commissioners, including that of the Chief Election Commissioner, have remained vacant for months.

Election Commissioner Ila Sharma said the Election Commission was ready to hold civil polls and had already forwarded the draft bill to the Ministry of Law and Justice.
