Congress to play vital role in implementing constitution

Kathmandu, August 7

NC’s Central Working Committee member Prakash Man Singh said the NSU should honestly work to create conducive environment for implementing the new constitution under the NC’s leadership.

The NSU has scheduled to hold voting for its new leadership on Tuesday.

Nepali Congress top leaders today expressed commitment to help the party play a leading role in implementing the new constitution promulgated under the NC’s leadership.

Inaugurating the 11th National General Convention of the party’s sister wing Nepal Student Union, the leaders said they would devote themselves to successful implementation of the new constitution.

“It is imperative to implement the constitution and it will be done with NC’s initiative,” said NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba. Stating that the left forces had become stronger, Deuba said the NC should strengthen itself to counter them and expected the NSU to play a vital role for the same.

Deuba urged the party’s student wing to be prepared to lead the country, as the old generation would transfer power to the newer generation sooner or later.

“We can improve the country’s democracy only if we improve ourselves,” Deuba said.

NC’s senior leader Ramchandra Paudel said since the constitution implementation process was at a critical juncture the NC’s leadership should take steps wisely. “We should be ready to amend the new constitution if some of the provisions are not practical,” Paudel said.

He urged party leaders not to intervene in the process of electing the NSU’s leadership from the ongoing NGC.

NC’s treasurer Sita Devi Yadav urged NSU leaders to go to villages with an awareness campaign to eradicate corruption from the country, as it was spoiling the country’s future.

CWC member Krishna Prasad Sitaula said, “Although Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal became prime minister with the support of the Congress, the main and bigger responsibility of implementing the new constitution is on the shoulder of Nepali Congress itself.”

NC leader, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi said the NC and the CPN Maoist-Centre’s alliance was formed to accomplish the responsibility of implementing the new constitution, as the government led by CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli had failed to deliver.

NC CWC member Purna Bahadur Khadka cautioned party leaders and the NSU’s rank and file to end the dreadful culture of winning the party’s elections with the support of money, muscle and power.

CWC members Chitra Lekha Yadav, Gopal Man Shrestha, Ram Sharan Mahat, Arjun Narsingh KC, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, Balkrishna Khand, Bishwa Prakash Sharma, Gagan Thapa and Dhana Raj also spoke.
