Nepal hopeful of Madhesi parties' participation in local polls

POKHARA: CPN-UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal stated that the Madhesi parties would also participate in the upcoming local level elections.

Nepal named the United Democratic Madhesi Front’s demand for the Constitution amendment a 'façade' and claimed that the Front would eventually come in favour of the elections.

Upon the UDMF's warning about withdrawing support from the government, Nepal added, "(Local) elections will not be postponed solely because the Madhesi parties withdraw their support from the government.”

The former Prime Minister also said, "The government should not back out of the election plans."

He commented that consensus among parties would not be seen anytime soon.

Nepal was of the view that the discussion on the demarcation of provinces should be held soon after the local level elections and consequently, the country should move on to provincial and federal elections.

He also said that the government should move the Construction amendment process and the local elections simultaneously.

However, the leader made it clear that the UML would not move forward with any election campaign soon. The party is concentrating on the Mechi-Mahakali campaign at present, he informed.
