Damage to Morang-Sunsari Irrigation Project estimated at Rs 800mln

PATHARI, MORANG: The Morang-Sunsari Irrigation Project has suffered a loss estimated Rs 800 million due to the floods triggered by heavy rainfall last week.

The major canal of the project had to be closed since August 10, and precaution adopted limited the extent of the damage, the project authorities said.

The flood waters with the discharge of 60 cusecs (cubic metre per second) gushed into the canal and damaged the 153-metre long bridge over the Lohondra River.

It would cost at least Rs 410 million to rebuild the bridge, said the project Chief Kunjan Bhakta Shrestha.

The project comprising one major and 22 auxiliary canals irrigate 68 hectares of land in Morang and Sunsari district.
