Driver killed as truck plunges 200m in Udayapur

GAIGHAT: A truck heading from Katari Bazaar to Okhaldhunga skidded and fell below the road, killing the driver and injuring his assistant, in Katari Municipality-14 of Udayapur district today.

The deceased has been identified as Mohan Bahadur Tamang (28) of Sirise in Katari Municipality and the injured as Purna Sunar of Dudhauli, in Sindhuli.

According to District Police Office, the truck (Na 4 Kha 8071) transporting goods along the Katari-Ghurmi road section plunged 200 metres onto the roadside lower hill, at Bhadaure, at around 8:00 am today.

Superintendent of Police Nawaraj Bhatta at the DPO cited high-speed as the cause of the accident.

Meanwhile, the injured has been receiving treatment at a local health post in Ghurmi. Further investigation into the incident is underway, said police.

In a separate incident, a bus heading in a wedding procession turned turtle, killing a person, and injuring others including the bridegroom, in Chure forest area, of Udayapur district last night, according to SP Bhatta.

The deceased has been identified as Manoj Das (32) of Banpanariya in Araria district of India.

The bus with Indian registration (BR 11J 4428) heading to Gaighat from Forbesganj of Araria district in India, carrying around 50 people, ran out of control and turned turtle in Chure forest area along the Sagarmatha Highway, at around 11:00 pm yesterday, according to the DPO.

Das died during the course of treatment at Udayapur District Hospital while others injured have been receiving treatment, said police.

Meanwhile, investigation into the incident is underway and search is on for the driver who fled the scene immediately after the incident occurred.
