EC agrees to hold provincial and parliamentary elections in single phase
KATHMANDU: The meeting between top three political leaders and Elections Commissioners this evening have decided to hold the upcoming provincial and parliamentary elections in single phase.
The meeting was held at PM Sher Bahadur Deuba's official residence in Baluwatar, Kathmandu, forged consensus to hold the elections on the third week of November.
However, the election date has not been finalised yet, Election Commission has proposed for November 20.
Chief Election Commissioner Dr. Ayodhee Prasad Yadav requested the government to endorsed the required elections related bills before Monday and submit the election delimitation commission report within August 31.
EC want the government to declare the polling date on Monday.
It has been learned that the EC had proposed to hold the first phase in 31 districts including Mountain and Hilly regions and the others in second phase.
However, EC agreed to hold the elections in single phase after the government committed to address its demands.
Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Dr. Ayodhee Prasad Yadav has said that the EC is gearing to hold the elections in single phase.
As per the constitutional requirement, Nepal should hold all level of elections by January 21, 2018 for the implementation of federalism and constitution in the country.
The government is set to hold the third phase of local level elections in eight districts in province number 2 on September 18.
Earlier, the government had held elections in all provinces in two phases.
