EC update "13,033 representatives elected in 280 local bodies"

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission on Friday has said that 13, 033 local representatives in 280 local bodies have been elected in 34 districts in Province number 3, 4 and 6.

Earlier, local level elections were commenced in these areas to select local representatives after 19 years in Nepal.

According to Joint Election Mobilisation Centre at Election Commission, the results of 280 local levels have been finalised so far.

EC Spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma informed that the polls results of Kathmandu Bharatpur Metropolises and Changunarayan Municipality are awaited.

As of now, 280 candidates as mayors, 280 candidates as deputy mayors, 2, 526 candidates as ward chairpersons, 2, 521 candidates as women members and 2, 380 candidates as Dalit woman members, have been elected during the first phase of local polls.

EC further said that the results of the remaining three local units would be announced by Monday. EC also informed that the preparations are underway to hold the local polls in remaining 41 districts in Province number 1, 2, 5 and 7 on June 14.

Meanwhile, UML candidate Bidya Sundar Shakya has received 57, 957 votes to his closet rival Nepali Congress' Raju Raj Joshi's 40, 690 votes. Shakya is maintaining a healthy lead of 17, 267 votes. He is likely to conquer the mayoral post of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

Similarly, NC's Hari Prabha Khadki has bagged 53, 009 votes to Rastriya prajatantra Party's Raja Ram Shrestha's 31, 351 votes. Khadki currently leads by 21, 658 votes. EC has informed that more than 80 per cent vote counting of KMC is over.

Likewise, in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, CPN-UML's candidate Devi Prasad Gyawali is maintaining a lead over CPN Maoist Centre's Renu Dahal.

Dahal is the daughter of caretaker PM Pushpa kamal Dahal.

Gyawali has received 36, 035 votes to Dahal's 34, 272. Gyawali currently leads by 1, 763 votes. The vote counting of ward numbers 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 would determine the winner of the closely contested election in Bharatpur Metropolis.

In Changunarayan Municipality, CPN-UML candidate has received 4, 215 votes to Nepali Congress' candidate's 3, 340 votes. NC's candidate has gained slight lead over UML in deputy mayoral post in the Municipality. NC's candidate has bagged 3, 845 votes to UML candidate's 3, 587 votes.

As per Election Commission latest update, CPN-UML has won 124 mayoral and chiefs posts in 124 local units while Nepali Congress has clinched 104 top posts in 104 local bodies, and CPN Maoist Centre has manged to triumph in 46 local units.
