Five persons injured in Banepa clash

Five persons were injured when a clash erupted between locals and security personnel on the issue of dumping site management at Thakurigaun of Banepa Municipality in Kavre district today.

The clash erupted when preparations were under way for the management of dumping site.  Locals protested when a dozer was used to level for installing a machine that would destroy garbage through smokeless Japanese technology.

Ram Gopal Suwal, a local, said the clash between irate locals and security personnel that started around 11:00am lasted for half-an-hour. Suwal said that Sarada Timalsina, 62, Raj Kumar Poudel, 50, and Maiya Khatri, 52, of the municipality were injured in the clash. They are been receiving treatment in Sheer Memorial Hospital, Banepa.

Suwal informed that almost all the injured have received bruises on their head. A critically injured Sabitri Thapa, 62, and her son Bhimsain Thapa, 22, were referred to Bhaktapur-based Madhyapur Hospital for further treatment.

Police fired six round of tear gas to take the situation under control. Police said that no security person was injured in the clash. Locals slept on the road when they brought the dozer to prepare a place to keep the machine. As many as 50 security personnel were deployed to the place.

Nepali Congress Municipal Committee protested after the municipality decided to set up the machine.

Locals led by municipal president Ram Joshi had protested the decision.
