Floods, lightning kill 4 in East

PHIDIM: Floods triggered by torrential rainfall since yesterday killed 2 people each in Ilam and Khotang districts of Eastern Development Region.

According to the District Police Office, Ilam, a 14-year-old girl died after she was stuck by a lightning in Danabari of Ilam.

Police identified as the deceased as Karuna Rai of Danabari-4.

Similarly, a man died after he was swept away by the swollen Ratuwa River.

The deceased has been identified as Phurba Sherpa (48) of Chulachuli-6 of Ilam.

Likewise, Surya Kumar Rai (53) of Mahamai, Ilam went missing after being swept away by the flooded Maikhola River.

As many as 30 familes of Sirse, Shantipur-5 have been displaced after mud and boulders started to fall due to the incessant rainfall since yesterday night.

According to DSP Prakash Ranabhat of the District Police Office, Ilam, the DPO has requested concerned authorities to shift the affected families to a safer place.

Police said that a family has been displaced due to floods in Kulbung-2 of Ilam.

Similarly, five families and two fmilies are at high risk of landslides at Suryadaya and Godak VDC respectively.

It has been learnt that landslides triggered by incessant rainfall obstructed roads in various places of the Mechi Highway.

Personnel from the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and locals with the help of three excavators are rigorously working since this morning to clear the debris.

Floods caused by heavyrainfall swept away a suspension bridge over the Karfok River.

Following the incident, locals of Godak and Chisapani VDCs have been badly affected and villagers of two villages remain cut off from other villages.

After the landslides swept away electric poles in Godak VDC, power supply have been disrupted in Ilam, Nepaltar, Rakse, Ranke and Phidim among other places.

Police said that two persons were killed and three others were injured after being struck by lightning in Khotang in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified Prem Bahadur Bishwakarma of Sawakatahare-8 and Kamara Rai of Kahuli-3.

Police identified the injured as Gita Bishwakarma, wife of Prem Bahadur, Nirmala Rai (24) and Maniraj Tamang of Kahule-3, Khotang.

DSP Binod Raj Kharel informed that a police team has been deployed to take them to a health post for tratment.

Police, however, informed that no human casaulties have been reported so far.
