Gorey under observation of rights activists

Biratnagar, May 23

Morang District Court has ordered to keep Chudamani Upreti, aka Gorey, the main accused in the smuggling of 33 kg gold and subsequent murder of Sanam Shakya, under observation of human rights activists while in police custody.

Gorey, who was produced before Morang District Court today for recording his statement, pleaded in writing that he feared threat to his life in police custody and should be kept under the observation of rights activists. Accepting

the plea submitted by Gorey’s lawyer, District Judge Narayan Prasad Sharma’s bench ordered to keep him under the observation of human rights activists while in custody.

It may be mentioned that Premlal Chaudhary, who was arrested in connection with the same case, had mysteriously died in police custody. He was detained by a probe committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Meanwhile, Upreti will be produced before the court tomorrow as well, as his statement recording didn’t finish today. Though he claimed that he knew most of the accused, he refused to say much. After being arrested in the capital, police had brought him to Biratnagar yesterday. He has been kept in the custody of Morang District Police.
