Hundreds of families at risk of landslides

Dhading, July 21

Hundreds of households in Dhading’s Nilkantha Municipality-11 are at high risk of landslides.

The land there had developed cracks after the 2015 earthquakes and the recent trend of haphazard road construction has added to the risk of landslides.

“We did ask the government not to construct the road without conducting environmental impact study, but to no avail.

The ground earlier shaken to the core by the quake is more at risk now due to haphazard road construction,” said local Ram BahadurThapa.

Jyamrung’sDamaiChautara, among others, is at high risk of being swept away after the ground there has developed cracks. Small landslips are already occurring at the site.

According to Nilkantha Municipality, Ward-11 Chairperson Tilak BahadurThapa Magar, around 150 households in Lamsal Village, Lamichhane Village, Pangre Village and Simle Jyamrung of the ward are at risk of landslides now.

“As they are at an obvious risk, the ward-level natural disaster rescue committee convened on Thursday has decided to request the agencies concerned in the district to relocate the houses,” the ward chair said.
