Hydro Victim Struggle Committee pickets Lamjung DAO

LAMJUNG: The Hydro Victim Struggle Committee in Lamjung has picketed the District Administration Office, Lamjung, on Friday to draw attention of stakeholders to its demands.

The Committee took the step calling the operating and under construction hydro-power projects to address their 24-point demands.

Moreover, the locals have announced protest programmes saying that the hydel projects in the district are operating against the law.

According to Coordinator of the Struggle Committee, Khem Raj Gurung, the protest programmes have been announced after the hydro-power projects failed to sit for public hearing, sign accords with affected locals, and operated against the law and international practices. Moreover, Gurung said that the hydro-power had disregarded civil rights.

The issue pertaining to fair compensation to those who own lands below transmission lines is legitimate and it has been forwarded to higher authorities, according to Chief Distrct Officer Yuba Raj Mainali.

The struggle committee has put forth demands of pre-information and agreement, dissemination of information on environmental impact assessment report, release of 10 per cent water from the project to rivers and construction of fish ladders among others.
