Int'l Sign Language Day is being observed today, play being performed

KATHMANDU: International Sign Language Day is being observed in Nepal with various programmes nationwide with the motto "Sign Language Rights for All". International Sign Language Day is celebrated worldwide on September 23.

On the occasion, National Federation of the Deaf Nepal (NDFN), the umbrella organisation of persons with hearing disabilities, will organise the play "Khaila Baila" at Sanskritik Sansthan-Nepal, Jamal in association with the British Council. Actors with hearing disabilities will perform the play.

Lack of communication is the first problem for persons with hearing disabilities, however, the prevailing legal system and social perception are still discriminatory regarding their rights, states the press release by NDFN.

According to NDFN, sign languages in 47 countries have gained national recognition while 15 countries have formulated laws regarding sign languages.

As many as 4,700 signs have been developed in Nepali Sign Language along with a sign language dictionary and mobile application.

However, the presser by NDFN laments the lack of establishment of a research and development centre for the Nepali sign language, development of textbooks, teaching and assessment methods, adding that the access of persons with hearing disabilities to education, health, communication, employment, interpreter services, state resources and services is still scarce.
