Local bodies’ staff on war path

Gaighat, February 13

Hundreds of service seekers are facing a hard time due to the agitation launched by the employees of local bodies in Udayapur district for the past week.

The civil servants have been staging a sit-in protest with black bands on their arms outside their offices since February 6. They have put forth a six-point list of demands and brought all services to a grinding halt at the District Development Committee, municipality offices and all VDCs of the district, leaving service seekers in a lurch. However, according to an office assistant at the DDC, they are partially performing their duties in the morning and evening.

They have demanded that a new act be drafted in such a way that it will allow more than 6,000 temporary staffers working in the local level to continue their services.

Meanwhile, hundreds of service seekers were hit hard after all local bodies remained shut for the second day today. The offices were shut as per the directive of Local Bodies’ Trade Union Joint Coordination Committee.

A large number of service seekers have been deprived of various services as civil servants loyal to the Local Bodies’ Trade Union have been staging sit-in at District Development Committee Gaur, Gaur municipality, Garuda Municipality and Chandrapur Municipality from 10:00am every day.

Local Bodies Employee’s Union Chairperson Shambhu Yadav said they were demanding incentives and elections of the local bodies at the earliest, among other things.
