LDT staffers launch protests

Lumbini, February 6

Lumbini Development Trust employees hired on contract basis have hit the streets yet again, protesting non-implementation of an agreement reached between them and the trust on January 27.

Daily administrative activities of the trust have come to a complete halt since Friday. The agitating employees have barred permanent employees from carrying out their regular work.

Prior to this, they had staged hunger strike from January 16 to 27, putting forth a five-point demand, including dismissal of member-secretary of the trust Ajitman Tamang, guarantee of professional security of contract and wage-based employees, immediate payment of salary and an end to irregularities and corruption in the trust. Earlier, the LDT management had agreed to depute member secretary to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and address their remaining demands gradually.

The agitators said the management addressed only one of their demands — payment of their remuneration. They have accused the LDT management of turning a deaf ear to their demands.

LDT Vice-chair Vikkhu Nigrodh said the trust was preparing to hold a meeting with the line ministry and executive committee to discuss the issues.
