Mahottari youth arrested with Rs 2.4 million worth precious metals

GAUSHALA: The Armed Police Force (APF) arrested a youth on the charge of smuggling and seized Rs 2.4 million worth silver and gold from Matihani Municipality-3 of Mahottari district on Wednesday night.

The arrestee has been identified as Dipendra Thakur (24) of Janakpur Sub Metropolitan City-4 in Dhanusha district, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Murari Basnet of APF Border Security Office at Jalsagar, Mahottari.

Acting on a special tip-off, a team of seven APF personnel deployed under the command of APF Inspector Umesh Ale intercepted an Indian registered motorcycle (BR 07 AB 4918) in Awarchok at around 8:00 pm last night and arrested Thakur after discovering consignment of gold and silver hidden in the two-wheeler, informed police.

According to APF, Thakur was allegedly smuggling the precious metals to Madhubani district in Bihar, India.

The seized consignment include 20 kilograms of silver and 200 grams of gold, collectively worth Rs 2.4 million, SP Basnet informed.

APF also impounded the motorcycle and confiscated a set of mobile phone from the arrestee.

Meanwhile, Thakur along with the seized items has been sent to Revenue Investigation Regional Office, Pathalaiya for legal action, said APF.
