Milk spilled on road in protest

Bara, August 15

Dairy farmers of Jitpur-Simara Sub-metropolitan City spilled milk on the road to protest the government’s recent decision to reduce the price of milk in Bara today.

As many as 150 farmers of Jitpur-Simara , who were associated with Dumarwana Milk Producers Cooperative Ltd at Manaharwa sub-centre, spilled the dairy produce.

Agitating farmers said they had no alternative but to dump their dairy produce on the road after Dairy Development Corporation, the sole government owned organisation, decided not to provide commission to the farmers. “We have to incur a loss of three rupees per litre of milk with the government’s decision,” said Dumarwana Milk Producers’ Cooperative Manager Thegendra Ghimire.

The demonstrators have demanded that they be paid the previous price of milk, be guaranteed the market for their product and that the price of milk be based on the production cost. They have also demanded restructuring of the DDC into a cooperative and formation of a committee to fix the price of milk, as per District Milk Producers’ Association Chair Dil Bahadur Lama.

The farmers have also warned of stringent protest if the government doesn’t revoke the decision and fix a new price of the milk as per their demand.
