Mudslides, floods damage crops worth tens of millions in Solukhumbu

Solukhumbu: Landslides and floods triggered by incessant rainfall on Sunday midnight have swept away two houses and scores of cattle in the district, destroyed over a dozen houses completely and damaged property and crops worth tens of millions of rupees, the District Administration Office said.

"A house at Nechabatase-7 was washed away and other 11 families in the settlement were displaced by a landslide triggered after the local river flooded, following rainfall," said Chief District Officer Jhadka Nath Dhakal.

Local people said the landslip also swept away more than 40 cattle and destroyed crops on hundreds of ropanis of farmland.

According to a preliminary estimate by police, crops and property worth tens of millions of rupees were destroyed.

Also, a house at Salyan-5 was swept away by a landslide and others 23 families in the settlement are at risk. Four other houses at Bung VDC were completely damaged by a landslide and other five houses were displaced.

Dhakal said, police have been mobilised to the affected areas for rescue.

Consequently, more than 900 families at Bung VDC are forced to live in dark after local Bhuwa river swept away a canal of 88 kilowatt-micro hydropower recently.
