Neighbouring village of Gorkha Quake epicentre in dire need of relocation

GORKHA BAZAAR: Continuous landslides triggered by the monsoon rain for one week in Ghyalchok village of Gorkha, near the epicentre of April 25 deadly earthquake, has put 29 houses at a high risk.

The Ghyalchok folks are in a great distress as the village soil is eroding continuously with the landslips. The landslips coupled with light rain have panicked the villagers much. So, the villages are searching for a safer location to leave the place.

The village neighbouring to Barpak, the epicentre of April 25 quake, had suffered massive damages during the quake. The Ghyalchok people who became homeless by the quake had managed to build temporary shelters and were living in the open fearing fatal consequences.

"We fear that the landslides may hit our shelters at any time and cannot enter there, they said. A team deputed by the Ghyalchok Village Development Committee to monitor the village returned empty-handed as the landslides blocked the way to village," said Committee coordinator Uddhav Prasad Timelsina.

He complained that though the District Disaster Rescue Committee was said to be prepared to shift the settlements vulnerable to landslides to safer locations, it was yet to be implemented.

The villagers, however, are unwilling to leave the village.
