Nepali among 7 Indian soldiers killed in Nagrota terrorist attack

KATHMANDU: A Nepali national serving in the Indian Army is among the seven servicemen killed in a terrorist attack on an army camp in Nagrota near Jammu on Tuesday, according to the Indian Army.

The Nepali man is identified as Rifleman Asim Rai (32), who hailed from Ratancha of Khotang district in Nepal.

Next of his kin has already been informed about the casualty.

According to Indian media reports, two Majors are among the casualties while three terrorists were also killed in retaliation. The army facility is reportedly 20 kilometre from the India-Pakistan border.

Referring to an eyewitness account, the Indian Express reported that terrorists, dressed in J&K Police fatigue, had stormed the XVI Corps headquarters around 5 am under the cover of darkness.

"In the early hours of 29 November 2016, a group of heavily armed terrorists disguised in police uniform targeted an Army unit located three kilometres from the Corps Headquarters at Nagrota," the Indian Army's Additional Directorate General of Public Information said in a statement.

The terrorists forced their entry into the Offices Mess complex by throwing grenades and firing at the sentries, it added.

"In the initial counter action, one officer and three soldiers of the Army were martyred."

One more officer and two jawans sacrificed their lives while rescuing officers and their families from two buildings where the terrorists barged into -- leading to a hostage like situation, according to the Indian Army.

Around 30,000 Nepali men currently serve in the Indian Army.

This is said to be the biggest terrorist attack in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir after the September 18 Uri attack in which 19 army personnel were killed. The Indian side accused Pakistan of its involvement in the attack.
