Pokhara sex workers demand labour rights

POKHARA: Women sex workers in Pokhara have asked the government to provide them a secured environment for continuity of their works as they do not have any other alternate for earning.

They have asked for the labour rights under fundamental rights of Nepal's new Constitution.

The sex workers demanded so as revealed by a six-month field study conducted by Mahila Utthan Tatha Jagaran Kendra of Pokhara.

The organization's Secretary Chameli Khati informed that all the women sex workers who were talked with in the research are happy with their earnings and profession.

However, they are ready to leave this profession if the government assures them of other jobs, informed Khati.

According to the survey, influence from friends and family disputes have enforced the women and girls to get involved in such profession.

The research findings were shared at a meeting, organised in Pokhara on Thursday.

Pokhara is in the top of the list of Nepali cities where many human trafficking cases are reported, followed by Birgunj, Biratnagar, Nepalgunj and Dhangadhi.
