Press freedom cannot be curtailed under any pretext: Deuba

CHITWAN: President of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that Press Freedom cannot be curtailed under any circumstance.

Speaking at an event organised by Chitwan Chapter of the Press Union today, the NC president said that Nepali media should be ready to face all kinds of challenges in future.

There is a possibility of press freedom being anchored and that will not be acceptable to the Nepal Congress, said Deuba. Stating that the Congress stands for press freedom, Deuba added, "Attempts have been made to curtail press freedom. It is the media’s responsibility to stand for and to speak or write in favour of people’s rights and nobody can stop the press from doing so.”

NC President Deuba inaugurated the Press Union Maiyadevi Information Centre building here, today. He also handed over awards to the recipients of Cheej Kumar-Bishnu Kumari Shrestha Memorial National Journalism Award.

Nepal Press Union Chitwan Chapter’s eighth district general convention was also inaugurated today.

Speaking at the event, NC General Secretary Dr Shashank Koirala said that journalism in a democracy must be fair and independent. He further added that the media should protest anybody’s ill-intentions to neglect the relevance of press freedom.

Mayor of Bharatpur Renu Dahal, Press Union President Badri Sigdel, Senior Vice-president Deepak Acharya, President of Nepali Congress-Chitwan Jeet Narayan Shrestha, among others were present at the event.
