Provice 2 MPs concerned about girls’ safety

Janakpurdham, September 7

Lawmakers from Parsa district today expressed serious concern about the security of daughters in the Provincial Assembly meeting of Province 2.

After a schoolgirl Muskan Khatun was attacked with acid yesterday, lawmakers speaking at the PA meeting expressed doubt over the success of ‘Educate Girl, Save Daughter’ campaign.

Samajwadi Party-Nepal’s lawmaker Karima Begam said the province government should first launch a campaign to save daughters. “A daughter first has to survive and then she can be educated. Thus, the government has to pay special

attention to save her in the first place,” she said. Begam demanded stern action against the guilty in the acid attack.

Another lawmaker of the party Bhima Yadav said series of acid attacks on daughters was a matter of serious concern.

Lawmaker from Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal Ganesh Kurmi said recent acid attack on a school girl showed that Nepali society was not safe for girls and women and that the government had done nothing to ensure their free movement. Kurmi asked the government to pay special attention to the safety of daughters.

Lawmaker Kishori Sah from the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) stressed the need to formulate stringent laws to punish people involved in the heinous crime of acid attack.
