Mahato calls govt to table Constitution amendment proposal

BIRATNAGAR: Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato on Saturday demanded that the government immediately table a Constitution amendment proposal at the House to address demands of the agitating Madhesi parties.

Speaking at a function organised by his party in Biratnagar of Morang today, Mahato also warned that the Madhesi parties would resume their protests if their demands were not met through the amendment by the Chhath festival, which is around a month away.

One of the key leaders of the United Democratic Madhesi Front, Mahato added that the government should implement the three-point agreement signed between two ruling parties, Nepali Congress and CPN Maoist Centre, and the UDMF before electing CPN MC Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal the Prime Minister in early August.

But, the government was yet to declare martyrdom status of 16 persons killed in anti-Constitution protests in the Madhes region and withdraw fake cases filed against cadres of Madhesi parties as demanded by the protesters, he said.

Meanwhile, as many as 32 cadres of various other parties defected to the Sadbhawana Party at the function.
