Rautahat woman ousted from home for failing to bring 'enough' dowry

RAUTAHAT: A woman was ousted off her home after accusing her of being unable to fulfill the in-laws' additional demand of dowry.

In-laws of Lovely Kumari Jaisw

al (22) demanded a yellow sapphire-studded gold ring. The demand was made weeks later a land plot was transferred to the ownership of the newlywed by Jaiswal’s parents from Bihar state of India as dowry.

Jaiswal had got married to Nabin Sah (aka Bikki) of Rautahat on February 6 this year.

Jaiswal said her husband had started inflicting mental torture on her after she informed that her parents could not afford the ring.

An educated woman, Jaiswal shared that she has been treated no less than a servant in her house. When she revolted against the mistreatment, she was called "mad" by her parents-in-law, Shova and Ajay Sah, and ousted out of the house, she shared.

The husband has recently filed an application at the Rautahat District Court for divorce claiming his wife was mentally retarded and speech-impaired from her childhood.

He denied demanding dowry, but stated that she was mentally ill. He said there was no alternative to applying for the divorce in such situation.

Meanwhile, the woman's father expressed his hurt stating that the groom had no objection until they provided him with a laptop according to his demand earlier.
