Saptari border tension ends after Nepal, India officials' deal

RAJBIRAJ: Nepali and Indian officials on Friday agreed not to continue any reconstruction work in the no-man's land near Tilathi VDC of Saptari district, ending a tension of two days.

Local security officials of the bordering nations signed a three-point agreement today to channelise the flow of Khando River toward its previous riverbed, take initiatives from the central level of both governments to search missing border pillars and put on hold the reconstruction of the disputed dam for now.

Earlier, on Thursday, tension had run high in the area after some Nepalis protested reconstruction of the dam carried out by India after it was swept away by a recent flood.

The reconstruction would be carried out later on the basis of a report prepared by a joint team involving government officials of the both nations, Saptari Chief District Officer Baldev Gautam said.

Earlier, the CDO Gautam-led team comprising SP Bhim Prasad Dhakal, Armed Police Force DSP Nirkrishna Adhikari among others had held the talks with Indian officials led by Supaul District Magistrate Baidya Nath Yadav.

The officials had monitored the situation at the reconstruction site before the talks.

Meanwhile, District Magistrate Yadav said the Thursday incident was unfortunate and action would be taken against them.

The Indian side did not have any intent to infuriate Nepalis, he admitted.

Earlier, total 12 persons had sustained injuries in a clash with Indian locals over reconstruction of a dam at the River.
