Scrub typhus claims nine in six months: EDCD report

RATNANAGAR: As many as 631 people have been found with the infection of scrub typhus and dengue diseases across the country.

Scrub typhus has so far claimed nine people in Nepal during the past six months.

The deceased patients include two from each of the three districts: Chitwan, Sankhuwasabha and Kailali; and one from each: Tanahun, Gulmi and Bhojpur.

According to the details received from different districts during mid-April to mid-October 2016, as many as 246 people were detected with the dengue infection while 385 with scrub typhus, shared the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD), Kathmandu.

According to the Chief of Epidemiology Section under the Division, Dr Gunanidhi Sharma, Chitwan district has the highest score of patients of both the infections. "Though comprehensive details of some districts are yet to be received, the typhus infection has been found in 38 districts of Nepal," Sharma informed, "Dengue infection is alarmingly increasing in some districts including Chitwan."

Dengue has been detected in Nawalparasi, Kapilvastu and Makawanpur besides Chitwan.

There are 526 patients with the infection of dengue and the typhus in Chitwan district alone.

Remaining 105 patients with the diseases are only being treated at hospitals in other districts. Among them, 27 were found with the dengue infection and 78 with scrub typhus.

Dr Sharma further informed that eight among the 101 scrub typhus patients lost their lives last year.
