Swollen Bagmati endangers human settlements

Rautahat, August 13

Rising water level in the Bagmati River has increased the risk of floodwaters gushing into human settlements in Rajdevi Municipality and Gaur Municipality in Rautahat district.

Incessant rainfall in the upper belt and Chure area has led to the rise in water level in the Bagmati putting human settlements in Rajdevi, Bramhapuri, Mudwalawa and Laxmipur of Rajdevi at high risk.

Locals from Rajdevi and Gaur Municipality living downstream have been informed to stay alert after the water level crossed the danger mark in the river at Raigaun. The message asking them to stay alert has worried locals.

District Disaster Management Committee Coordinator and Chief District Officer Govinda Prasad Rijal and his team inspected various places likely to be affected by the flood and warned the locals to stay alert today.

Flood in the Bagmati has continued eroding land at Rajdevi village. Some 20,000 sacks of sand and nets have been provided to locals to control the erosion along the river banks.

Chief at Water Induced Disaster and River Control Office, Parwanipur, Raj Kumar Sriwastab said his office was doing everything possible to save the settlement from floods and erosion.
