Torrential rains, flood, landslip wreak havoc across the country

KATHMANDU: Series of landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall over the past week across the country have ravaged roadways, school and houses while killing two people and injuring few others.

Moreover, the landslides have increased the chances of blocking the Budhiganga River at Dwari, the confluence of Budhiganga and Triveni River in Bajura. The debris falling into the river at several places has narrowed the channel of the swollen Budhiganga. It has posed threats to the settlements downstream, including Sanfebagar bazaar, and Sanfe-Martadi road section.

 

Kali Gandaki river sweeps school, house

Likewise, over flowing Kali Gandaki river has swept Dhaulagiri Adharbhut School and a mother’s group building at Kopchepani in Maygdi district on Wednesday.

A flood occurring at 4:00 am forced the river to change its course and engulfed the infrastructures putting more houses in the region at high risk.

The river has cut through few areas along the Beni-Jomsom road section obstructing vehicular movement. It will take three to four days for the roadway to become fully functional again, Chief District Officer Lila Adhikari said.

Likewise, three people sustained injuries after a landslip buried six houses in Malika Rural Municipality, today.

Out of the three injured, two were treated in a local hospital while a person who has sustained critical injuries was referred to Pokhara, CDO Adhikari informed.

Locals in the area ran and saved themselves from being buried while the residents of houses nearby the incident houses have been warned.

Similarly, Lasti Bazaar which houses around 100 households in Parbat District is at a high risk of flooding as the Lasti River changed its course and is gradually cutting the land in Jaljala Rural Municipality.

 

Two women killed as heavy rain collapses house in Baglung

Two women of the same family residing at Nisikhola Rural Municipality-3 in Baglung District were killed after their house collapsed on Wednesday.

65-year-old Dhan Kumari Shahi wife of house owner Maan Bahadur Shahi and their daughter in law 35-year-old Dalli Shahi died after being buried under debris of their house which collapsed following a week of torrential rain in the area.

According to Gandaki State Police, the deceased’s body was handed over to their kin after a team including Chief District Officer Bed Prasad Pokhrel, Police Chief, Dipak Regmi and doctors inspected the incident site in the remote western outskirts of the district.

 

Landslide obstructs road to Manang

 

A landslide occurring along the Besi Shahar-Chame road section has swept away a 150-meter-long stretch of the roadway bringing vehicular movement to a complete halt.

According to Head of Chame rural Municipality, Lokendra Ghale, the only way to the tourist destination of Manang in the Himalayan region is now blocked and at present reconstruction works cannot be carried out.

Likewise, 12 houses in the region are at a high risk of being swept away by landslips.
