Training for journos in ethical reporting

Dhangadi, February 21

A two-day training on ethical reporting of Gender Based Violence for media personnel working in the far-western districts kicked off in Dhangadi today.

According to organisers, the main objectives of the training are to increase journalists’ awareness and understanding of different forms of violence against women, girls and men and to encourage them to apply ethical principles to ensure the safety and dignity of GBV survivors when reporting news stories.

Inaugurating the training, Kailali District Judge Dhan Singh Mahara said mediapersons play a key role in documenting Gender Based Violence and drawing the stakeholders’ attention to address this issue. The training was organised by Sancharika Samuha and supported by the Government of Norway as well as the United Nations Population Fund.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Acting Chief District Officer of Kailali Hira Lal Chaudhary said journalists in the far-west lacked extensive knowledge on how to highlight GBV issues through news writing. He also expressed hope that the training would help journalists play a pivotal role in responding to GBV stories.
