Tusker destroys five houses in Chitwan

Chitwan, April 22

A rouge wild tusker has entered settlement areas and demolished houses in Chitwan.

Assistant Conservation officer and Information Officer Nurendra Arayal at Chitwan National Park said an elephant destroyed five houses at 11:00pm last night.

Following the incident, locals today obstructed vehicular movement along the Bharatpur-Madi-Thori Postal Highway and demanded  compensation for the loss caused by the elephant.

According to Nepal Darai Promotion Society, houses belonging to Ram Bahadur Darai, Shant Kumar Darai, Buddhiram Darai, Mayaram Darai and Magara Darai at Khadgauli of Bharatpur metropolis were destroyed.

Locals and security personnel chased the tusker away after he started wreaking havoc on human settlements.

CNP Information Officer Aryal suspected the elephant might be the rouge wild tusker Dhrube.

A few days ago Dhrube had eloped with a female elephant Tirthmankali, after breaking the chains the female was tied with at CNP’s Sukhibhar Post.

Aryal said Dhrube might have arrived at Hattisar of Kasara after it left the female.

The elephant might have reached Khadgauli across Kasara and destroyed the houses yesterday.

“A directive has been issued not to threaten and chase the tusker even if it consumes food items at CNP posts,” Aryal said.

Chasing and threatening the tusker could exacerbate the problem, he added. “The beast will calm down in a few days.”
