5 killed, 12 injured in Dhading bus fall

DHADING: At least five persons died and 12 others sustained injuries after a bus they were travelling on skidded off  the road in Benighat Roranga Rural Municipality-5 along the Prithvi Highway in the wee hours of Thursday.

The Khanikhola-based Area Police Office identified the deceased as the bus driver Kamal Dhungana and his assistant Nawaraj Siwakoti, both the residents of Shivasatasi Rural Municipality-6 in Jhapa district.

The bus (Na 5 Kha 2293) heading to Kakadbhitta from Kathmandu fell about 20 metres below the road, killing Dhungana and Siwakoti on the spot at Bishaltar at around 3: 00 am, according to the Gajuri-based District Traffic Police Office, Dhading.

The injured were rushed to a local hospital in Malekhu where three of them died during the course of treatment, the APO said. Others were sent to Kathmandu after they received treatment at the hospital.

In a separate incident, a passenger bus (Na 5 Kha 879) heading to Kathmandu from Birgunj ran over a man killing him on the spot at Jyamireghat in Benighat Roranga Municipality-9 on Wednesday evening.

It is yet to establish the identity of the deceased who appeared to be a mentally challenged man in his 40s, said police.

The man was crushed to death by the bus which was being moved forward after being parked in a roadside motel for meal, said the Jogimara-based Police Post.
