Udayapur locals living amid abduction terror

Gaighat, April 28

Locals in Udayapur are holding onto their lives after reports of abductions, allegedly by the CPN Maoist led by Netra Bikram Chand, have surfaced once again.

Over the week, news of two persons, including a government officer, being kidnapped has rattled the locals.

Five days ago, a group of four or five Maoist men whisked away Laxman Prasad Sah, a tobacco trader, of Triyuga municipality-12 from his home. Detained in the party office, Sah was released a few hours later after a kin informed the police.

“Though I had done nothing wrong, I was taken hostage for hours,” Sah expressed his view. “They threatened to do anything to me and took me away.Later I knew that my business partner had told on me, apparently for no fault I had done,” the trader who was shaken by the kidnapping explained.

In another incident, a few from the Maoist party took Udayapurgadhi Rural Municipality technical assistant Uddhav Dhungana away from his office today.

Dhungana was freed two hours later. Dhungana’s colleague said he was kidnapped at gunpoint.

Meanwhile, CPN Maoist district in-charge Kedar Rai denied that his party has ‘kidnapped’ locals.

“No one was kidnapped or threatened. We were just acting to resolve some cases after victims of some injustices approached us for help,” Rai argued.

However, District Police Office Udayapur Chief SP Nara Bahadur KC clarified that police had freed Sah from a house, where he was locked up in a room. “As soon as we were informed, a police team was dispatched,” the police officer said, adding no one was arrested as there was no one at the site.

Bahadur further vowed to arrest those elements who are spreading terror in the society.
