UDMF'll support Constitution amendment bill, says Mahato

KATHMANDU: A key leader of the United Democratic Madhesi Front, Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato, said the UDMF would help the government endorse the Constitution amendment bill registered at the Parliament.

Speaking with journalists at the Reporters' Club in the Capital on Sunday, Mahato said the Front, however, would fight hard in order to include five districts of Tarai – Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Kailali and Kanchanpur – into Madhesi-majority provinces.

"There should be two provinces from Jhapa to Kanchanpur," he said, "We will not be back from this stance."

However, the disgruntled forces would support the amendment bill currently awaiting discussion at the Parliament as it would help protect the achievements made so far, he clarified.

Meanwhile, Mahato accused the CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli of having double standards in his ideas about nationalism and provincial boundaries.

The leader claimed that the recently proposed boundary of Province No. 5 was proposed by Oli himself earlier.

The UML was acting against the parliamentary norms and values by obstructing the House meetings to discuss the Constitution amendment bill, he said, "The UML should correct its behaviours. The proposal should be discussed at the House."

He also criticised some central leaders of ruling Nepali Congress and CPN Maoist Centre for objecting to the government's proposal to split the Province No. 5.

"This is a drama," he said, "We have asked Sher Bahadur Deuba and Prachanda (Pushpa Kamal Dahal) either to stop it or take action."

Speaking in a different context, Mahato said the Madhesi parties never demanded that persons with naturalised citizenship should be given rights to hold significant positions including the President and the Prime Minister.
